Holistic Books: Healthy Additions to Your Home Library

Holistic books are a great addition to any home library, especially if you want to keep up with the latest breakthroughs in natural health. So grab a cup of chamomile tea and browse my recommendations for your next good read.

The first book on my list is ” Breast Cancer: Reduce Your Risk With Foods You Love.” Written by yours truly, this natural approach to preventing breast cancer has received critical acclaim from holistic health practitioners across the country, inluding Dr. Andrew Weil. It is available now at http://www.breasthealthplan.com  as well as Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com.

I also recommend the following holistic books:

Katz, R., Edelson, M. The Cancer Fighting Kitchen: Nourishing, Big-Flavor Recipes for Cancer Treatment and Recovery . Berkeley: Celestial Arts, 2009.This beautifully illustrated cookbook is also filled with good information on how to eat for prevention, and has sections of special recommendations on how to eat during different stages of cancer treatment.

Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book, 4th edition . Cambridge: Da Capo Press, 2005.Written by a breast surgeon, this is the most comprehensive book on breast health for non-medical audiences. It thoroughly covers anatomy, development of the breast over the lifespan, explanations of breast diseases and different types of tumors, and how surgery and medical therapy are used in treating breast cancer.

Block, K., MD. Life Over Cancer: the Block Center Program for Integrative Cancer Treatment . Bantam Books, 2009.This is a written blueprint of how the Block Cancer Center in Evanston Illinois approaches cancer treatments in an integrative fashion. Dr. Block is an oncologist and a recognized leader in the Society for Integrative Oncology. Here you will find a truly effective and science- based combination of conventional cancer treatments and natural remedies that enhance treatment.

Abrams, D., and Weil, A., eds. Integrative Oncology . Oxford University Press, 2009. A scholarly edition in the Oxford University Press’ Weil Integrative Medicine Library, this is a collaboration between Dr. Abrams, an oncologist at San Francisco General Hospital, and Dr. Weil, the leading innovator in bringing natural medicine into the mainstream. Many other experts in the field contributed to this textbook. It is written as a medical reference volume for physicians who wish to bring Integrative Medicine to Oncology.

Weil, A., MD. Eating Well for Optimum Health . Harper Collins, 2000.Dr. Weil’s classic volume on the power of good food for the prevention and treatment of disease, no home should be without it.

Weil, A., MD. Healthy Aging: a Lifelong Guide to Your Well-Being . Random House, 2005.In a reassuring and meticulously well-thought book, Dr. Weil crafts a response to “anti-aging” medicine. He shows how much better it is to acknowledge growing older as a potential for growth and change, while using natural medicine and wellness as the way to stay healthy and vibrant far into old age.

Jahnke, R., OMD. The Healer Within . Harper Collins, 1997.Drawing on years of practice and teaching of Chinese Medicine, Qigong (chee-kung) and Tai-chi, Dr. Jahnke presents a simple set of gentle exercises and breathing techniques which unlock the inner pharmacy, or as he says “the most profound medicine”. Illustrated and easy to follow, it is a treasure of self-applied healing methods.

Carson, Rachel. Silent Spring: 40th Anniversary Edition . Mariner Books, 2002. One of the most influential writers of the 20th century, this pivotal work in 1962 first alerted the American public of the dangers to our health and to our planet of chemical based agriculture. Her notion that we could actually destroy the earth and ourselves in the process was new and radical thinking then, and it is no less important today.
