Reducing Symptoms of Mesothelioma
Symptoms of mesothelioma are a commonly occurring area where holistic medicine can play a key role. This dangerous cancer requires aggressive treatment, and the treatments themselves are often responsible for some of the most distressing symptoms of mesothelioma. So while I encourage patients to continue with conventional cancer treatments, I also encourage patients to explore ways in which holistic medicine can relieve discomforts. But first a little background.
Exposure to a naturally occurring mineral known as asbestos is the primary cause of a type of cancer called malignant pleural mesothelioma.Depending on when this cancer is diagnosed, treatment of this cancer may involve conventional surgery and chemotherapy which can cause the patient pain, nausea and a myriad of other distressing side effects. Many people turn to holistic medicine therapies that can ease these side effects as well as to promote overall wellness which strengthens the patient’s ability to fight the cancer.
The most widely accepted form of holistic medicine treatment during chemotherapy is acupuncture. In fact, it is so widely accepted that even some insurance companies cover acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely fine needles into pressure points at clearly defined locations on the skin to improve the balance and flow of factors referred to as Yin, Yang, Qi, and Blood in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This type of treatment can provide relief from chronic pain, inflammation, anxiety, and stress. In the view of Chinese medicine, acupuncture also strengthens the entire patient, building a healthy foundation for effective treatments.
Aromatherapy can also be a great way to ease symptoms of mesothelioma as well as improve physical and psychological well-being. This holistic medicine technique uses fragrances in oils, lotions, and other substances to support the patient’s self-healing capacity.. Aromatherapy starts with essential oils which are highly concentrated oils from various plants. Patients coping with various serious diseases can use aromatherapy to help address the illness itself, as well as aid in relaxation. For example, a massage with essential oils can help the oils travel directly to the affected organs or area of pain. Throughout treatment, the aromas help patients become more relaxed, alert, and mentally able to fight any disease.
Dietary supplements have also been used by cancer patients to promote health, and research is underway to evaluate the place of nutritional supplements (especially antioxidants and immune support) as a complement to conventional cancer treatments. It is very important to with a physician or another medical professional about supplements. Many supplements are often marketed as “natural” or “organic,” but that does not guarantee safety. There are real consequences for taking too many supplements, or taking ones that conflict with other medical treatments.
So whether dealing with symptoms of mesothelioma or beginning any kind of treatment for a disease or medical condition, talk with a medical professional about available options, including supplements and other forms of holistic medicine.
